OSHC Adventures programs reflect a nationally approved framework called ‘My Time, Our Place’ which prescribes an integrated and collaborative approach to programming between educators, families and their children.
Rather than teaching everything that we think children need to know, our team give children the chance to decide what’s important to them and the tools to achieve them. By listening to children, and learning about their interests, we have found that the outcomes are much more positive. At OSHC Adventures, we value the voices of children, We listen and observe the children throughout the day and the week, and pay full attention to their interests, questions and needs. From there we devise a program or curriculum plan that encompasses these. Our dedicated team of Educators act as co-constructors and facilitators of children’s learning.
How we as Educators find children’s interests:
Meaningful conversations with children
Observing children through anecdotes, jottings and learning stories
Creating strong relationships with families and caregivers
Based on the observations and information gathered, Educators incorporate the program with the help of children. Being child-led, the program is easily assimilated by the children. Some interests are short-lived whereas some are constant and children simultaneously revisit and revise or perfect their acquired skills
What resources does OSHC Adventures use to facilitate child-led programming?
The best resources to use are open-ended, as this means that the outcome is limitless and unpredictable. Our Educators are attentive and responsive to children’s interests and do not dismiss ideas such as messy play as a part of their learning. Children’s interests may take a few days, months or years to explore, It all depends on the child.
